Silly Jill ................................................
|
Molly likes to watch the birds
And sing new songs with made up words. Lou jumps on the trampoline And tosses up his Jumping Bean. Natasha is a silly girl Her favorite game is Spin-Spin-Twirl. Marco spots a climbing tree And as he climbs he shouts "Yipee!" Then there's Jill. Jill does not sing Or stretch Or bend. She does not climb Or play with friends. The one thing that Jill likes to do (You must believe that this is true) is WIN. Jill is first in any line. Last year she got eight Valentines. (That's three more than most other kids And seven more than Sal McSquid.) When Jill begins to wash her face She also starts a private race. Faster, Faster, Faster, FAST. She must be quicker than days past. The family cat is Mr. Mouse Who's often chased around the house By Jill Jalopy's baby sis Who looks to be in utter bliss. 'Cause she adores the family cat She loves him so, no doubt of that. But Jill insists of being best So Mousey gets no time to rest Before Jill grabs him by the chest And turns the game into a test. She makes a face at Mary Lou and says, "I win, I always do." When kids pack one lunch, she packs two. Her skirts are redder, Her writing's better, Her dad is stronger, Her hair is longer. |
Jill likes to win no matter what.
Jill likes to win no Ifs or Butts. Then on Tuesday, March the third, A strange sound that she'd never heard Made Jill Jalopy stand quite still. It seemed to call out "Jill, Jill, Jill!" High and low she looked around Searching for the lovely sound. Up in the sky? Down on the ground? At last she found the magic spot And with her stomach all in knots She asked the people she saw there "What... who... why... how...when... and where?" Her body shook from toes to chin. At last she said, "I want to win." The people laughed and shook their heads With cautious grace they slowly said, "Jill Jalopy, you've got it wrong. We're making MUSIC, playing SONGS. "It's not a thing you win or lose And while there are some don'ts and do's It's all about the notes you choose. "If you go high then we'll play low. We'll sound like waves, and birds, and snow. Now let's slow down. That's it! No rush! Nos let's play loud! Now quiet. Hush! "Listen, listen, listen well... Who's the winner? Can you tell "So if you'd like to join our group Our menu don't list Winner's Soup. Sit down, Jill, and hear us play And you will know a different way To feel how good it feels to win. A better way to make you grin." Then they picked up drums and flutes And made some beats and hums and toots. And Jill has never been the same Since music sweetly called her name. So remember all you gents and dames It's really how you play... the game. |
